SLIP Software

If you want to use Internet software like Netscape or Eudora while you are connected to the network via a modem, you have to install SLIP software. SLIP stands for Serial Line Internet Protocol.

For the Macintosh, you can use MacSLIP version 3.02. It is available in MacArchives in the Network Folder. It is free and licensed to Stanford. Complete instructions on its installation and use are in the MacSLIP folder.

SLIP will enable you to use programs from home like

  • Netscape
  • Eudora (email)
  • Fetch (ftp)
  • InterNews (USENET News)
  • NCSA Telnet

    If you want to be able to print to Stanford printers, or mount an AppleShare volume from home, you will need to install ARNS. ARNS is available free of charge and is located in the MacArchives Network Directory.

    If you are in Biochemistry, you could also use AppleTalk Remote Access. Check with Mary Smith for the phone number of the ARA server.

    For the PC (and the Mac), you have to ftp over to ftp.stanford.edu. You will need to log in using your leland username and password. Once in the Stanford ftp site, you will find the software you need in the "/software/licensed" folder.
